On Friday, May 1st a group of chapter officers attended the annual 100 Club of Central Texas Awards Banquet held at the Westin at the Domain in Austin. Derrick Porter, 2014 Fight Night Chairman, Andrew Bain, current Consul and a fighter in Fight Night in the fall, Tim Davis, current Tribune and 2014 Fight Night Committee Member, and Mike Opolski, 2015 Fight Night Chairman, attended the event and received recognition on behalf of the chapter for funds donated from 2014’s Fight Night event, our main philanthropy event of the fall semester.

Held on November 7, 2014, Texas Fight Night raised $100,123 for both national and local charities. This year, we started a relationship with The 100 Club of Central Texas, and we chose them as a local recipient of our philanthropic efforts. The 100 Club of Central Texas provides immediate assistance both financially and emotionally to injured and killed first responders and their families in Travis and neighboring counties. At the banquet, we were pleased to present the 100 Club of Central Texas with a check for $5000 for funds raised from Fight Night.

2014 Fight Night Chair Derrick Porter had the opportunity to speak about Fight Night and why we chose the 100 Club as a beneficiary of last fall's event.

The awards banquet honored outstanding first responders who go above and beyond their roles as policemen, firefighters, and EMS rescue workers and perform extraordinary lifesaving tasks, often putting their lives at risk to help our communities. Stories of firefighters traversing flash flooded areas in raging rapids to rescue a woman whose car had been swept away by a storm and pulling her to safety through her sunroof exemplified the outstanding work these men and women do each and every day. We are proud to support an organization that helps these brave men and women and their families when they are in need.

In addition to recognizing the great work seen in our police departments and fire departments, a somber wave overtook the meeting as multiple first responders who lost their lives on the job were remembered. Thankfully, it is the mission of the 100 Club to provide for these victims and their families as they can provide immediate financial relief for them.

After the awards ceremony, the night transitioned into a dinner and casino night. We had a great time meeting and talking to various police and fire department members, as well as other donors supporting the efforts of the 100 Club.
